How to Take Care of Your Child’s Teeth: A Parent’s Guide to Healthy Smiles

1. Start Early — Even Before the First Tooth Appears

Many parents wait for the first tooth to erupt before thinking about dental care, but oral hygiene starts much earlier.

  • Newborns (0–6 months): Gently wipe your baby’s gums with a clean, damp cloth once or twice a day to remove bacteria.
  • Teething phase: As teeth start to appear (around 6 months), switch to a soft baby toothbrush and gently clean their teeth twice daily.

2. Use the Right Amount of Toothpaste

  • Under age 3: Use a smear the size of a grain of rice.
  • Ages 3–6: Use a pea-sized amount.
Always supervise brushing and make sure your child spits out the toothpaste — swallowing too much fluoride can lead to fluorosis.

3. Make Brushing and Flossing Fun

Turn brushing into a fun routine, not a chore. Try these tips:

  • Sing a two-minute song while brushing.
  • Let your child choose a colorful toothbrush with their favorite character.
  • Use a sticker chart to track brushing and reward consistency.

Once teeth touch, introduce flossing once a day to remove plaque between teeth that brushing can’t reach.

4. Limit Sugary Snacks and Drinks

Sugar is a leading cause of cavities in children. Be mindful of:

  • Sticky snacks like gummies and dried fruits.
  • Sugary drinks, including juice and flavored milk.
  • Frequent snacking between meals.

Encourage healthy snacks like cheese, yogurt, apples, and raw veggies — foods that are not only nutritious but also help clean teeth naturally.

5. Schedule the First Dental Visit Early

The American Dental Association recommends children visit the dentist by their first birthday or within 6 months of the first tooth.

Early dental visits help:

  • Catch issues before they become serious.
  • Get your child comfortable with the dental environment.
  • Educate parents on proper home care and nutrition.

6. Be a Role Model

Children mimic what they see. If they see you brushing and flossing daily, they’re more likely to adopt the habit themselves. Make dental care a family routine.
